Val joined SHIELD in 1989, graduating from the SHIELD Academy of Operations. She became a close friend and field partner of Nick Fury, rising through the ranks to Level 9 / Deputy Director by the time of SHIELD's fall in 2014.

Her files were leaked in the chaos, revealing she was a triple agent who was actually working for Leviathan, infiltrating both SHIELD as a sleeper agent and HYDRA on behalf of SHIELD and Leviathan to steal technology. Fury destroyed Leviathan in the midst of taking down HYDRA and Val turned herself into jail. Fury promptly broke her out after she confessed she felt the most loyalty towards him and SHIELD.

Now Val works as Acting Director of a faction of SHIELD, preparing to put a team together for an upcoming war with Doom.
